The fauna of the aquatic invertebrates of the small stream ecosystem under conditions of continuous logging (middle taiga, Komi Republic, Russia). Description

This dataset provides current data on aquatic invertebrate’s fauna (zooplankton and zoobenthos) of the small water body (Komi Republic, Russia; middle taiga) in the zone impacted the logging zone. Data include revealed taxonomic groups of zoobenthos (27) and lower-rank taxa (species, subspecies) for some (model) groups (113): Oligochaeta, Mollusca, Cladocera, Copepoda, Coleoptera, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera, and 54 taxa (species, subspecies) of zooplankton (Rotifera, Cladocera, Copepoda). A total of 1990 occurrences are included in the resource.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The dataset provides information on the number of individuals of aquatic invertebrates in zoobenthos sample and the number of individuals per cube meter in zooplankton sample. Hydrobiological samples were collected on the section of the small stream located in the zone of logging in the period before and after felling.

Sampling

The study was conducted in May-September 2020-2022 on a small stream. 5 sites were selected on the water body (1 km long): Site I – small stream, impact zone, logging zone, control point; Site II – small stream, above the logging zone, background zone; Site III – small stream, above site II, above the logging zone, background point; Site IV – small stream, impact zone, logging zone, below Site I; Site V - swampy ditch, impact zone, logging zone, below Site IV. The data were obtained in 2020 (before logging) and in 2021/2022 for the first and second year after logging. The list of species contains only our own data.

Quality Control

The data were collected and identified by specialists from the Institute of Biology of the Komi Scientific Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Morphological analysis specimens were performed using compound microscopes BIMAM R13-1, Leica DM 4000B. All species within Rotifera, Cladocera, and Copepoda were identified in zooplankton samples, while Oligochaeta, Cladocera, Copepoda, Coleoptera, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera were identified in benthic samples. For identification of species and higher-level taxa, we used both standard keys and data reported in modern studies specifically addressing the taxonomy of these groups (Chekanovskaya 1962; Timm 2009; Korovchinsky, 2004; Keys to freshwater invertebrates…, 2000, 2001; Key to identification of zooplankton and zoobenthos, 2010; Kutikova, 1977; De Smet, 1997; Elliott, 1988; Lillehammer, 1988; Teslenko, Zhiltzova, 2009; Lepneva, 1964; Krivosheina, 2012).

Method steps

  1. The studies were carried out in May-September 2020-2022. Quantitative hydrobiological samples were taken from different depths (from 0.1 to 0.5 m). Zooplankton samples were collected using plankton nets with subsequent filtration through 82–100 μm mesh nylon nets. All benthic samples of fine sediments were sampled using the hydrobiological scraper (0.04 m2) with mesh size ≤158 μm. Samples were preserved in 4% formaldehyde (in the field) and examined under light microscopes in the laboratory.

Geographic Coverages

The watercourse is located in the middle taiga zone in the Komi Republic (61,9149 N 50,5375 E; 61,9145 N 50,5352 E). The study was carried out in the territory impacted logging. The data were obtained in 2020 year (before logging) and in 2021/2022 years for the first and second year after logging. The small stream (1 km long, width 0.5 m) is characterized by shallow depth (0.2-1.0 m), the bottom is sandy and silted, with detritus
