Ocean Networks Canada Society (2024). Main Endeavour Field Biological Observations, Hercules Remotely Operated Vehicle Camera, observed in dive number H1877 on 2021-08-16. Ocean Networks Canada Society. Sampling event dataset https://doi.org/10.25607/fzme1b accessed via GBIF.org on 2024-12-13.Description
Video-based occurrence data of species in Main Endeavour Field of the Northeast Pacific were collected by Ocean Networks Canada Society during the NEPTUNE 2021-08 Nautilus expedition. Using an Insite Pacific Zeus Plus HD Camera mounted on the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Hercules on 2021-08-16 09:18:15 - 2021-08-17 01:13:41, human observers recorded sightings of marine species using ONC's proprietary SeaTube V3 dive logging software. This ROV is operated by Ocean Exploration Trust. Once observations are verified, the dataset files are automatically generated, checked and submitted for publication. Related video, ancillary data and metadata can be found for the ROV dive at https://data.oceannetworks.ca/SeaTubeV3?resourceTypeId=600&resourceId=5510.Sampling Description
Study Extent
Video-based occurrence data of species in Main Endeavour Field of the Northeast Pacific were collected by Ocean Networks Canada Society during the NEPTUNE 2021-08 Nautilus expedition.Sampling
Observations were recorded using an Insite Pacific Zeus Plus HD Camera mounted on the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Hercules. Human observers recorded sightings of marine species using ONC's proprietary SeaTube V3 dive logging software.Quality Control
Peer review of annotations is done through the STV3 expert review tool. Annotations were reviewed by subject matter experts using ONC's SeaTube V3 dive logging software with a minimum of 4 reviews and a threshold of 75% positive reviews for the annotation to be included in the dataset. Generated DwC-A is validated by using an open-source tool available at Github: Pyobistools. https://cioos-siooc.github.io/pyobistools/Method steps
- ONC conducts annual maintenance expeditions on its cabled observatory network.
- On-shore and on-ship dive loggers annotate live video during ROV dive events using SeaTube V3 software. The annotators are generally not biological experts.
- Biological observations are not the primary objective of ONC operations except during scheduled visual transects, but rather are made opportunistically as World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) taxa.
- These annotations are stored in the ONC database, and can be accessed along with the dive video in SeaTube V3.
- Annotations are peer reviewed for accuracy by volunteer expert reviewers.
- Following review and validation, a DwC-A file is generated and made available via OBIS.
Taxonomic Coverages
Opportunistic and visual surveys of organisms spotted in deep sea marine environment. Marine life was identified by loggers in real-time to the most confident rank. Rankings were remained (stet.) at this rank due to lack of time, expertise, or both.
