Coleoptera records from iRecord for families not covered by a recording scheme

Dataset homepage

Citation

Biological Records Centre (2025). Coleoptera records from iRecord for families not covered by a recording scheme. Occurrence dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/qah8xl accessed via GBIF.org on 2025-06-17.

Description

This dataset contains records collated via iRecord for a set of 30 Coleoptera families that are not included in any national recording scheme. Most of the records are unverified and this needs to be taken into account in any use of this data.

Purpose

This dataset makes available records for Coleoptera families that are not covered by recording schemes, in order to share potentially useful data on species that are generally poorly-known.

Sampling Description

Quality Control

For the most part the records are unverified, since there are no relevant national recording schemes for these families. A small proportion have been verified by county Coleoptera recorders. The recorders include some very expert entomologists whose data is likely to be of high quality, but also includes records from more inexperienced recorders, some of which are likely to be misidentified. Users of this data should ensure that they take this into account.

Method steps

  1. This dataset includes records of 30 Coleoptera families that have been made available via iRecord, but for which no full national recording scheme exists. Most of these are ad hoc records from volunteer recorders, but may also include data from professional surveys and from citizen science projects such as bioblitzes.
