During the oceanographic expedition GC06-1, 8 stations were sampled using a Reineck box corer on soft bottoms from the continental shelf of La Paz Bay and the Southwestern Gulf of California. Samples were collected during the spring of 2006 at depths ranging from 46 to 208 m, and 56 species belonging to 39 genera and 22 families of Polychaeta (Annelida) were identified. Environmental data of depth (m), salinity (psu), temperature (°C), dissolved oxygen (ml/L) and, sand and mud percentages were also measurement at each station.Sampling Description
Study Extent
The samples were collected during the oceanographic cruise GC06-1 on board the R/V “El Puma” of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), during the spring (May) of 2006. Eight stations with depths between 46 and 208 m were sampled inside La Paz Bay and Southwestern Gulf of California.Sampling
The geographic position of the stations was determined with the on-board GPS, the depth with a Konsberg (SIMRAD ES60) echosounder, salinity and temperature with a Niels Brown CTD, and the dissolved oxygen concentration with the Winkler method (Strickland and Parsons, 1977), the granulometric analysis was carried out with the Carranza-Edwards (1997) method.Method steps
- The biological material was collected with a Reineck box corer. The sediment was sieved through a 0.5 mm sieve and the macrofauna was fixed with 10% formalin and preserved in ethylic alcohol 70%. The polychaetes were identified to species level and the validity of the identified species names was verified with recent systematic reviews and with the World Polychaeta database (Read and Fauchald, 2018).
