Vascular Flora of the Sevastopol Area (Seregin, 2008): accepted names

A list of the tracheophyte names accepted in the paper "Contribution to the vascular flora of the Sevastopol area (the Crimea): a checklist and new records" (Seregin, 2008). It includes 1,385 accepted species. The dataset was compiled as a first step towards further processing of the modern checklist for the City of Sevastopol, Russia.

Initially, the checklist by Seregin (2008) included 1,385 accepted (i.e. consequently numbered) species, but also 72 species recorded earlier in the literature but not confirmed by specimens and 60 species collected in adjacent localities outside the area. These 132 species were excluded from the dataset.

As a result, the dataset includes 1,407 taxa - 1,385 species and nothospecies (incl. 1,340 species without further subdivisions), 6 species aggregates, 53 subspecies, and 7 varieties.

Several minor orthographic errors in either scientific names or their authors were corrected manually. Nineteen names were not automatically cross-linked with the GBIF backbone. Seven names (i.e. Artemisia lerchiana Web. ex Stechm., Bupleurum pauciradiatum Fenzl ex Boiss., Himantoglossum caprinum (M.Bieb.) K.Koch, Mentha longifolia (L.) Nathh., Ruscus ponticus Woronow ex Grossh., Vincetoxicum juzepczukii (Pobed.) Privalova ex Wissjul., Vincetoxicum schmalhausenii (Kusn.) Stankov) have some discrepancies in indication of their authors. They were left as they are within the dataset, because these variants are commonly used. Four unlinked names are subspecies/variety autonyms (Allium jajlae var. jajlae, Calamagrostis epigejos subsp. epigejos, Sideritis taurica subsp. taurica, Veronica taurica subsp. taurica) and six names are species aggregates (Helianthemum canum (L.) Baumg., Pimpinella tragium Vill., Taraxacum officinale Wigg., Taraxacum erythrospermum Andrz., Veronica anagallis-aquatica L., Vicia sativa L.). Two names are absent in IPNI and need verification against protologues (Malva sylvestris var. eriocarpa Boiss., Rumex tuberosus L. subsp. horizontalis (K. Koch) Rech. f.), whereas Psoralea bituminosa subsp. pontica (A.P.Khokhr.) Zernov is not indexed in GBIF backbone. Orthography of the genus Onopordon was not corrected (Onopordon tauricum Willd.).

Further records were published by Seregin et al. as "Second contribution to the vascular flora of the Sevastopol area (the Crimea)" (Wulfenia. 2015. Vol. 22. P. 33–82), where we reported 323 new vascular plant species for the Sevastopol area. They are not covered by this dataset.
