This dataset presents a digitized format data on the occurrence of eight edible Saturniidae species belonging to five genus housed in the Invertebrate zoology section, Zoology department in National Museums of Kenya. The dataset highlights basic information on the geospatial distribution of different sub-Saharan edible saturnids species. This information is vital for future ecological studies as a reference and can also be used in IUCN red listing assessments as well as monitoring of population trends in the different localities.Sampling Description
Study Extent
Dry and wet collection saturnids specimen housed in the National Museums of Kenya, Nairobi.Sampling
Specimen and species data was captured in excel spreadsheet. The data was aligned to the Darwin core standards in order to be published through National Museums of Kenya IPT.Quality Control
The dataset was validated by the taxa experts at the Invertebrates Section, National Museums of Kenya. Other resources such as verified online databases and guidebooks were used as references.Method steps
- 1. The specimens were first catalogued. 2. The data was then mined from the specimen labels and populated on an excel spreadsheet that conforms to the Darwin Core guidelines. 3. The dataset was then cleaned using OpenRefine and by the taxa experts. 4. The data records that were missing the geo-coordinates were georeferenced using GeoLocate. 5. The dataset was then validated on the GBIF data validator and any corrections reviewed and corrected. 6. The dataset was then published on GBIF using the National Museums of Kenya IPT.
