This metadata describes an ornithological sampling event carried out in the Tosso forest, Taraba Sate Nigeria with over 200 known species of birds. The Tosso forest is located in the southern part of Taraba State, North-eastern Nigeria. It is a poorly known lowland forest laying along the border of Nigeria and Cameroon, between the Obudu Plateau to the southwest and the Mabilla Plateau to the northeast, apparently cut off from other lowland forest blocks by these two highland massifs, and the Bamenda highlands in Cameroon to the south. The area is relatively unpopulated, but logging activity and hunting takes place within and around the area. Despite these, there is still considerable amount of forest left in the area. A total of 52 individuals of 16 species were recorded during bird ringing sessions carried out between 05 May, 2019 and 07 May, 2019.Purpose
This data set contain bird species that illustrates the importance of the site and bird species of conservation concern. When collated with other data, this information will be provided to the Government at both the State and Federal levels to push for the conservation of these sites.
Sampling Description
Study Extent
This dataset was collected in forest patches in Tosso community of Taraba State, Nigeria. The survey lasted from 05th of May 2019 to 07th of May 2019. The habitat is low-land forest interspersed by rock formations and small seasonal streams. The elevation of the area is between 290 - 388m above sea level and the average rainfall is about 2500 mm/annum.Sampling
Mist nets (comprising five of 18 m, three of 12 m, one of 9 m and one of 6 m) with total length of 141m were mounted randomly within Magaji and Zanyi portions of the Tosso community of Taraba State of Nigeria. The nets were opened at 7am and closed at 1pm. Net rounds were carried out every 30 minutes after the nets were opened. Captured birds were ringed following the South African Ringing Scheme. Birds were identified to species level, aged, sexed and morphometrics were taken (wing length, weight, pectoral muscle score, fat score, brood patch, moult).Quality Control
Individual species were carefully handled and identified to species level before being added to the database. Data collected were checked for errors by the Principal Investigator, Professor Mark Hopkins.Method steps
- The data collected was extracted from a pdf report of the ornithological survey then formatted according to the Darwin Core Standard in an excel spreadsheet. Scientific nomenclature were confirmed on Encyclopedia of life website, https://eol.org/. The species matching tool on GBIF was then used to generate phylogenetic data on each observation. The geographic location for each record were extracted from a Garmin GPS system using BaseCamp. Publishing of the dataset was done through the IPT at the National Museums of Kenya.
