Citation

Description

This dataset contains select insects collected from two malaise traps located in Orleans County, Vermont, USA. The Malaise traps were set a few feet above the ground, with one in a suburban garden and the other in a rural yard at the interface between a large wetland complex and mixed hardwood forest. Collection vials were retrieved every few weeks as necessary during the growing season. All bees (Anthophila) and lady beetles (Coccinellidae) collected were identified and included in this dataset. Some other insects were included as incidental records. Ichneumonid wasps (Ichneumonidae) and other taxonomic groups will be added as they are processed and determined.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

Insects collected from malaise traps run from May to October 2021 at two sites near Barton VT

Sampling

Malaise traps set a few feet above the ground, one in a suburban garden, the other in a rural yard at the interface between a large wetland complex and mixed hardwood forest. Collection vials were retrieved every few weeks as necessary through the growing season.

Quality Control

Bee specimen ID by Spencer Hardy and Michael Veit

Method steps

  1. Insects were stored in ethanol. Bees were rinsed, pinned, and labeled following standard protocols. Some distinctive non-bees were not pinned but counted and preserved in separate vials with ethanol. Remaining insects were shipped to Brandon Claridge for Ichneumonid work and further distribution of additional taxa.

Taxonomic Coverages
