The DMZ Botanic Garden under the umbrella of the Korea National Arboretum is a governmental entity that researches into native plants to the DMZ and border areas, Northern lineage plants, and North Korea plants, and it is conducting research on the construction, conservation, and utilization of biodiversity data on the Korean Peninsula. Established in 2016, the DMZ Botanic Garden has planted 570,000 individuals of 1,100 species in 8 thematic gardens including Northern Plants Garden, Rare and Endemic Plants Garden, Bog Garden and War Garden.
The Korean Peninsula are evaluated to have high biodiversity compared to the size of the territory since it has a long history of vegetation development in acting as a bridge connecting Eurasia and the Americas from the Mesozoic Era as well as various plants have evolved in unique climatic and topographical conditions.
The DMZ Botanic Garden aims to understand the ecosystems of East Asia through research on North Korea plants and Northern lineage plants as well as contribute to the restoration and conservation of the ecosystem by developing techniques for cultivating northern and alpine plants in response to climate change, therefore establish a foundation for restoration of degraded vegetation in North Korea after unification and search for materials for commercialization in East Asia. This dataset holds information about the primary species occurrence data of North Korean plant accessions that are cultivated at the Garden.
