Description

The project "Open biodiversity data: serving nature conservation in Ukraine" is supported by the Rufford Foundation and is aimed on collecting data on biodiversity in Ukraine by specialists of the Ukrainian Nature Conservation Group (UNCG) for publication in GBIF. The project became especially relevant in connection with the invasion of Russian troops into Ukraine, which led to many threats to rare species in different parts of Ukraine.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

During this project, participants organized expeditionary research and documented the presence of species in the areas identified by the project in the priority regions. The project territory covers all territories of Ukraine that remaone accessable during the period from 2020 to 2023. Each group of organisms had its own methodology of collecting of information.

Sampling

The species presence was recorded after their identification (visual, audial, based on derivative material). Fungi and plant records have been made using route approach. All records were photographed, images stored in inaturalist.org. Bat inventory was carried out using mist nest, settled up from 9PM to 1AM on the places where bat was actively flying - forest roads, gaps, edges. All the captured bats were released back to the wild after identification. Methods for recording of fungi and bat secies included: 1) route trips for fungi collection; 2) photographing fruit bodies, collecting specimens when it was needed for accurate identification; 3) passive capturing bats using 5-meter-long mist nets; 4) identification, description, and releasing animals. Photos of fungi and plants available on inaturalist.org. Standard methods of general faunal surveys were used during the field expeditions - from actual count and registration of the animals on the routes to the methods including special means of registration (photo traps, video cameras, bait traps, etc.).

Quality Control

The authors are responsible for the quality of data provided within the dataset. All authors are speciealists in their specific group of living organisms (e.g. fungi, bats, herpetofauna, birds, insects etc.).

Method steps

  1. Conducting of field research.
  2. Species identification.
  3. Georeferencing.
  4. Organizing of the dataset according to the Darwin Core standards.
