Sampling event dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/knfvk6 accessed via GBIF.org on 2024-12-15.Description
The dataset contains records of the Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) and other nocturnal birds of prey (Aves) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. A total of 32 acoustic sampling points was established along the lower Sabor river valley and in its main tributaries, which were visited each year in the peak of the species' breeding season (February) from 2010 to 2014. Data contains a total of 19 observation events of Bubo bubo (17) and Strix aluco (4).Purpose
This dataset is part of a broader initiative whereby the company EDP - Energias de Portugal S.A. will made available biodiversity data collected during impact assessment and biological monitoring studies.
Sampling Description
Study Extent
Data were collected in a 5-km buffer around the lower Sabor river valley and its main tributaries, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro e Macedo de Cavaleiros.Sampling
Acoustic sampling was performed at 32 count points, located in high ground near areas of favourable habitat for the Eagle Owl located along the lower Sabor river valley and its main tributaries, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream. Each sampling point was visited ± 3 hours around sunset, corresponding to the period of greatest daily vocal activity of the Eagle Owl. In each point, a period of spontaneous listening of vocal activity was performed ("SCP", 8 minutes), followed by the playback of the Eagle Owl call (3 minutes) and for a final period of listening to the potential response of the focal, and other species ("PPP", 10 minutes). The identification of the responses was made "in loco" by experienced observers.Quality Control
