Description

The data represent records of 90 sampling events, carried out in the months of April, May, August and November 2000, with the purpose of characterizing the composition, abundance, spatial and temporal variation of zooplankton in 5 zones of Los Roques Archipelago National Park. Most of the taxonomic entities recorded have abundance information in individuals per cubic meter, while for some entities only occurrence information is provided.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

Sampling was carried out in the selected areas in April, May, August and November 2000, representative of the periods of drought, onset of rain and rainfall, respectively.

Sampling

At each station a sample was taken by vertical dragging with a Hensen net (mesh size = 285 microns) from 6 m depth to the surface. The collected samples were fixed in situ with diluted formaldehyde. Some environmental parameters were measured: depth, water transparency (Secchi disk), temperature and salinity with a multiparameter sensor (Horiba U-10). Each sample was analyzed by means of a 2 ml aliquot taken with a Hensen-Stempel pipette and placed in a Bogorov chamber to quantify the number of individuals under the optics of a stereoscopic microscope (magnifying glass); the total volume of the sample was observed to detect species that did not appear in the aliquot; zooplanktonic groups were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level; total abundance was reported in number of individuals per cubic meter (Ind/m3).

Taxonomic Coverages

Identification of zooplankton organisms includes meroplankton larvae and planktonic species. Identification was performed at different taxonomic levels, from kingdom to species level.
