The dataset includes data on the density and species composition of birds during the breeding season at the permanent sample plots (the areas for bird census). Surveys were conducted from 1984 to 2018 with survey season between May and middle of July. The permanent sample plots are located in typical forest habitats of the strict nature reserve (category IUCN Ia): pine forest, oakwood, spruce forest, and mixed forest. During surveys 52 species of birds were recorded in total.Sampling Description
Study Extent
The observations were carried out from the beginning of May to the middle of July and were divided into 3 periods approximately on such terms: mass nesting start - May 01-31; mid mass nesting - June from 01 to 25th; the end of mass nesting from 26th of June to 19th July. The bird census was carried out at 7 permanent sample plots, at 4 of them annually. The size of the observation plots are 25-40 hectares. The shape plots were alike quadrate (500x500 m) or rectangular (around 300x830 m). Data is presented in individuals/permanent sample plot.Sampling
The survey of birds was carried out according to the ICP IM methodology (1998), section 7.24 Optional subprogramme BB: Inventory of birds. There are some changes in methodology: the birds accounts were carried out almost every year but without mapping of individuals. The results for several counts in each period (month) were averaged. The tables present, as a rule, the average data for each species for 2-3 (or sometimes only one) visits to the area for bird census.Method steps
- The methodology of field survey has been described in Manual for Integrated Monitoring. 1998. Finnish Environment Institute, ICP IM Programme Centre, Helsinki, Finland.
