In the beginning of 2020, Aage V. Jensen Nature Foundation acquired a big nature area Søholt Storskov placed between the three largest lakes in the middle of the island of Lolland in the Southern Baltic Sea. The area of 1,134 ha comprises old and young deciduous forests, lakes and agricultural land. Map of the area: https://www.avjf.dk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Søholt-Storskov_Sort-afgrænsning.pdf Description in Danish: https://www.avjf.dk/avjnf/naturomraader/soeholt-storskov/ The foundations goal is to preserve and improve the nature values and biodiversity in the area. Prior to the planned nature restoration activities, Aage V. Jensen Nature Foundation initiated a baseline monitoring programme for the biodiversity in Søholt Storskov. Entomological survey conducted by Emil Blicher Bjerregård was a part of this programme.Sampling Description

N/ASampling
Butterflies, burnets, dragonflies and damselflies were counted (the number of individuals per species) along fixed routes (transects) following the ‘Pollard Walk’ method (https://www.ukbms.org/), with some modifications. The transect is a 5 m wide band, and the insects are counted inside an imaginary box - 2.5 m each side and 2.5 m in front and above the surveyor. The transect is walked during 30 minutes at a steady and a constant speed (ca. 1 km per hour). It is allowed to stop when catching and identifying species, but without counting when one is stationary. In total 20 transects were set in the area, each 500 m long. A detailed description is given in the report: https://www.avjf.dk/rapporter/soeholt-storskov/insektmonitering-2020-soeholt-storskov/ Each transect was walked 5 times during the period from May 1st to September 1st 2020, with the frequency of min. 10 and max. 30 days. The counts were made between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. in reasonable weather conditions: 1) Dry weather; 2) Wind speed max. 4 Beaufort (moderate breeze); 3) Air temperature min. 17o C when cloudy (>50 % cloud cover); 4) Air temperature min. 13o C when sunshine (<50 % cloud cover).Quality Control
