The present dataset is “ Documentation on Fish Diversity of Santragachi Jheel(significant for migratory ducks), Howrah, West Bengal, India” is published by Nature Mates Nature Club West Bengal comprises many large and small water bodies which are bestowed with diverse aquatic flora and fauna. Santragachhi jheel is one such water body covering an area of about 12.75 hectares which has gained its popularity as a visiting place for many migratory birds from trans himalayan, and some local migrants during winter. The length of the jheel is about 915 m. and width is 305 m, depth varies from 4 to 7 ft. This Jheel is surrounded on all sides by human habitation including railway quarters, shops, railway yard, industrial units, domestic and commercial cattle shed. The main aquatic vegetation of the lake is the Water Hyacinth(Eichhornia crassipes). As a result of the unscheduled and excessive removal of Water Hyacinth in 2018, the bird population dropped as low as 800. In response to this inconvenience, a lake restoration effort was crowdfunded in 2019 by volunteers and the Kolkata-based NGO Nature Mates-Nature Club. Even though only half of the lake was restored due to the delayed response, the count increased threefold in the lake. With the help of the West Bengal Biodiversity Board, Nature Mates-Nature Club successfully finished the restoration process in 2020. As a result, this year in Santragachi, almost 5100 birds from 16 genera, including four species of Trans-Himalayan Migrators, were seen. This dataset specifically includes all the fishes recorded in a span of one year (2021-2022). All the species were identified up to the species or genus level. A total of 22 species of fishes were recorded belonging to 13 families and 9 order.Sampling Description
