Description

A dataset contains 4270 unique occurrences of 119 ciliates taxa (species, genera and families) from Chernaya River estuary (Kandalaksha Bay, White Sea). The dataset is based on field studies by Yuri A. Mazei and Igor V. Burkovsky performed in 1998–2000.

Dataset contains occurrences and geographic coordinates of marine stenohaline species occurring in the marine part of the estuary, marine euryhaline ciliates represented both in the marine and the freshened zone and brackish water organisms dominating in the riverine part of the estuary.

All data has been published in the related publications (Burkovskii and Mazei 2001; Mazei and Burkovsky 2002; 2005)

Sampling Description

Study Extent

Investigations were conducted during 1998-2000 summer periods in the Chernaya river estuary (the Kandalaksha Bay, the White Sea).

Sampling

Material was collected at 5 permanent stations. The stations were located at the middle horizon of the intertidal zone along the estuary. Each station was a strictly fixed sampling area 50 x 50 cm, where recordings of the ciliate abundance were performed. Extraction and quantitative counting of ciliates were performed on live individuals (Uhlig, 1964). The ciliates were identified on the Shatton-Lwoff silver-impregnated preparations (Foissner, 1991), according to Carey (1991).

Method steps

  1. Each sample was a series of 15 subsamples (1 cm2 in square, 3 cm in height), collect-ed from a strictly fixed square 50 x 50 cm. A random sampling, corresponding to 1/15 of the total sample, was examined (i.e., one mean statistical square centimeter). Extraction and quantitative counting of ciliates were performed on live individuals (Carey, 1991). The ciliates were identified on the Shatton-Lwoff silver-impregnated preparations (Foissner, 1991), according to Carey (1991).
