Fish occurrence data in the Terminos Lagoon, Campeche

Description

Information on fish species occurrence data is provided, belonging to the Terminos Lagoon coastal ecosystem, southern Gulf of Mexico, during the years 1980-1981, 1998-1999, 2010-2011, and 2016-2017. The information forms part of a compilation of four datasets mostly derived from the sampled material by the research program on tropical fishery resources of the “Instituto de Ecologia, Pesquerias y Oceanografia del Golfo de Mexico, Universidad Autonoma de Campeche (EPOMEX-UAC)”. The current dataset represents the first and most comprehensive open-access source of information corresponding to the fish assemblages occurring along the Terminos Lagoon ecosystem.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

Terminos Lagoon Flora and Fauna Protection Area, Campeche, Mexico.

Sampling

Nekton samples were collected with a shrimp trawl net. This is an active fishing method consisting of a 5-m long net with a mouth opening diameter of 2.5 m and mesh size of 19 mm. The net was trawled at a speed of ~4.6 km h-1 (2.5 knots) for 12 min, covering an area of 2000 m2 each trawl.

Method steps

  1. Nekton samples were placed in plastic bags and stored in ice during the sampling campaigns. In laboratory, fish were sorted and identified to the species category. Organisms belong to the last three sampling campaign were transferred to ethanol and guarded at the fisheries laboratory of the EPOMEX-UAC institute.

Geographic Coverages

The Terminos Lagoon is situated in the Mexican littoral zone of Campeche, forming part of the Tropical Northwestern Atlantic’s marine ecoregion 69 (Southern Gulf of Mexico). Terminos Lagoon is a shallow water body (3.5 m depth) that covers an approximate water surface area of 1700 km2; it is a lagoon-estuarine system separate from the Gulf of Mexico by the Carmen Island, connected to the sea by two inlets permanently open: Puerto Real inlet on its eastern side and Carmen inlet on its western side. It receives freshwater from three streams on its southern part: Palizada River, Chumpan River, and Candelaria River.
