BMHS Crustacean Collection

Description

This data set outlines the various types of crustaceans housed in the Barbados Museum and Historical Society's natural history collection.

Purpose

This data was created for research and preservation purposes.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The extent of the study is confined to the collections which have already been donated to the museum since it's conception in 1933.

Sampling

For the BMHS, there is no field sampling, as specimens are donated to the museum for various sources. Unfortunately, not ever specimen donated is given a proper sampling record by the donor upon receipt of the specimen.

Method steps

  1. Each specimen has an ownership record when it's donated to the museum. After being received the specimens are stored with research done for the classification. Items are then measured and photographed before entry into the database for publication.

Taxonomic Coverages

All specimens were identified to family or species using various resources to verify the taxonomic data.
  1. Dromia
    rank: genus
  2. Uca sp.
    rank: genus
  3. Scyllarus sp.

  4. Persephona

Geographic Coverages

The Barbados Museum & Historical Society is located within the Barbados UNESCO World Heritage site of Bridgetown and its Garrison. Formerly a military prison for the British , it was converted into a museum in 1933.
