Otter in coastal areas - Carcasses

Citation

van Dijk J, Vang R (2022). Otter in coastal areas - Carcasses. Version 1.64. Norwegian Institute for Nature Research. Occurrence dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/1hlmhr accessed via GBIF.org on 2022-08-18.

Description

Since 1971 private persons, authorities and companies can send in otter carcasses to NINA who since then has an extended database and sample collection (e.g. muscle tissue, liver, kidney, heart samples). We collaborate with Artsdatabanken and Naturdata AS for exchange of other observations on dead otters (e.g. traffic kills, permission issued and legally shot, in fishnets drowned) to get a reliable and holistic overview of changes in population demographic parameters and population distribution over the years. The data is used for calculations of the national otter density index, updating the Norwegian Nature Index (otter as indicator species for fresh water ecosystems and for coastal ecosystems) and used in reporting to the Bern convention.

Sampling

See also Metadata Description.

Method steps

  1. When carcasses or other otter remains reach NINA, NINA personnel take a variety of measures (e.g. sex, estimated age, weight, length, tooth layer identification of age, condition) and collect a number of tissue samples (e.g. muscle, liver, kidney, heart). We also collaborate with the national archive ‘Miljøprøvebanken’ and collect large samples of otter liver tissue for environmental toxicological analyses.
