Benthic amphipods from Alacranes Reef, Campeche Bank, Mexico

Description

The dataset contains information about records of benthic amphipod crustaceans collected in the Alacranes Reef, southern Gulf of Mexico, during the years 2009 - 2011.The identified material form part of the crustacean regional collection from the UNAM-Sisal, and represents the first inventory of amphipods from the Alacranes Reef National Park.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

Alacranes Reef National Park, Gulf of Mexico

Sampling

Several types of coastal habitats were probed, such as beaches of homogeneous white sand, coral rubble bars, sea grass beds of Thalassia testudinum (Banks ex König, 1805), sandy bottoms, and shallow coral reef flats.

Method steps

  1. All samples were anesthetized with MgCl2, and then fixed with 10% formaldehyde solution buffered with seawater before storage. In the laboratory, samples were washed through a 500 µm size mesh and transferred to 70% ethanol. Species were sorted and identified to the lowest possible taxonomical rank. Specimens are deposited and vouchered at the regional collection ‘Crustáceos de Yucatán’ (YUC-CC-255-11), UNAM-Sisal.
