The dataset contains records of bats (Chiroptera) collected in roosts along the lower valley of River Sabor, in the scope of the Ecological Monitoring (PME) and Mitigation/Compensation Measures (PMC) Programs of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between February 2015 and February 2020, during field visits to 266 known bat roosts, both natural (caves, mines, tunnels, bridges, buildings, etc.) and newly-built/recovered, within the scope of PMC (an underground roost built near the dam, adapted pigeon lofts and mines, sealed mines, and shelter boxes) for hibernation and reproduction, within a 5-km radius around the lower valley of River Sabor. The presence of individuals was recorded by direct observation. The records include taxa identified at the species or genus level. In one occasion it was not possible to discriminate the species, so they were grouped in a “species complex” of two species of the same genus. More than 55,000 individuals of 20 taxa (17 species and 3 genus/”species complexes”) were recorded in 2,080 observation events. Due to the vulnerability of the roost locations, the precision of the geographic coordinates was degraded to 0.01, according to the recommendations of Chapman & Grafton (2008). The dataset with the original (undegraded) coordinates may be provided upon request by the resource contact from EDP, who will define the terms and conditions for its use.Purpose
This dataset is part of a broader initiative whereby the company EDP - Energias de Portugal S.A. will make available biodiversity data collected during impact assessment and biological monitoring studies.
Sampling Description
Study Extent
The data were collected within a 5-km radius buffer around the lower valley of River Sabor Northeast Portugal), up to 90 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Mogadouro, Alfândega da Fé, Macedo de Cavaleiros, Freixo de Espada à Cinta, Bragança, Miranda do Douro and Vimioso.Sampling
Sampling was designed to cover all known and potential bat roosts in the study area that remained after the flooding, including caves, mines, wells and all sorts of buildings. A new set of constructed (1 artificial shelter, 160 bat boxes in trees, 7 bat boxes in bridges) and reconstructed/improved roosts (4 pigeon lofts, 4 natural shelters, 4 mine entrances), were added in this monitoring phase, to survey the effects of the Compensation Measure MC5 (“Use of Artificial Roosts by Bats”) implemented in 2014/2015. A place was considered to be a roost when the presence of bats was confirmed, either by direct observations or by indirect evidences (e.g., faeces, urine stains, etc.). Each roost was visited once or twice per season, depending on the year, in the hibernation (January-March) and reproduction (April-July) periods. All roosts were searched for the presence of bats by two observers, which recorded all individuals seen, dead or alive. The time spent in each roost varied with the number of bats present and of the accessibility conditions. In some roosts associated to the MC5 (mine/mine entrances, buildings, pigeon lofts, artificial shelter) records of temperature and relative humidity were taken,Species identification were usually made “in situ”, with the aid of head-torches, binoculars and field guides. Abundance data refers to the total number of adults, sub-adults and juveniles present, including the dead individuals, but not the cubs, which were counted separately.
