Description

This dataset presents the distribution and diversity of epilithic diatoms collected in two field campaings at Deserta Grande Island (Madeira archipelago, Portugal).

Sampling Description

Study Extent

Diatoms were sampled from several freshwater habitats were sampled during two field campaigns in Deserta Grande, in 2013 and 2014.

Sampling

Diatoms were sampled with help of a toothbrush to remove the biofilm and placed into a tray with a little water. The resulting suspension was collected in a plastic bottle, fixed with Lugol iodine and stored prior to analysis.

Quality Control

Samples for diatom analysis were following the National and European recommendations.

Method steps

Diatom slides were mounted with Naphrax, and at least 400 valves per sample. were counted and identified to species or variety level under oil-immersion phase contrast light microscopy using a ZEISS AXIOIMAGE A1 microscope. General diatom floras were consulted for diatom identification.

Geographic Coverages

The Desertas sub-archipelago is located 20 km southeast of Madeira Island. Deserta Grande is the largest of the three islets, with an area of approximately 10 km2 and a maximum altitude of 479 m.
