Description

This dataset contains 917 specimen records of 179 chironomid species between 1989 and 2015 in Japan, which are based on the Chironomid DNA Barcode Database published by National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan (NIES). The Chironomid DNA Barcode Database can be found at https://www.nies.go.jp/yusurika/en/index.html.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

Chironomid species were captured in Japan and Tuvalu from 1989 to 2015.

Sampling

Specimens were collected in three major ways. (1) Larvae and pupae in bottom sediments were captured with a Ekman bottom grab sampler or a dip net in lentic waters and with a Surber sampler or a D-frame net in lotic waters. Aquatic weeds were also hand-collected for periphytic species. (2) A part of chironomids captured underwater was reared to adults in the laboratory. They were kept in water aerated with a pump in tanks. (3) Midges were collected with an emergence trap or a sweeping net on and around waters where they emerged.

Quality Control

Scientific names were validated against the Catalogue of the Insects of Japan Vol.8 (Yamamoto and Yamamoto 2014) and the GBIF Backbone Taxonomy.

Method steps

  1. Morphological identification was used to determine the species names of specimens, along with DNA barcoding and ecological observations for a limited number of species. Geographic coordinates and uncertainties were measured using gazetteers such as Google Maps following procedures described in Chapman and Wieczorek (2006). Chironomid specimen records were extracted from the Chironomid DNA Barcode Database and organized into species occurrence data using a MySQL database.
