Mission

The preservation of biodiversity is one of the most important challenges of national and global development, since natural resources, being renewable and non-renewable, require rational and sustainable participatory management, in which everyone can participate preserving heritage, for the indulgence of present and future generations.

Angola has a high biodiversity in both flora and fauna. The country's institutions have vast collections with potential for sharing biodiversity information. In Angola, there is a growing need to gather and make available biodiversity information at national and international levels. The national GBIF Node aims to provide open access to biodiversity data of Angola to research institutions.

Funding

  • Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation
  • Ministry of Telecomunications.
  • Agostinho Neto University; Botanic Center and Faculty of Science

History

Angola's formal participation in GBIF began in April 2019, with the signature of Memorandum of Understanding between GBIF and Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation of Angola. In July the national Node was established at the Botanic Center of Agostinho Neto University.

Structure

The Angolan network includes several institutions that deal with primary biodiversity data, such as:

  1. Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation: Agostinho Neto University - Faculty of Sciences, Botanic Center, Plant Genetic Resources Center; Mandume ya Ndemufayo University - ISCED of Lubango; University 11 of November; Lueji A´Nkonde University, Kimpa Vita University and Katyavala Bwila;

  2. Ministry of Agriculture: Forest Development Institute and Quilombo Agricultural Experimental Station;

  3. Ministry of Fisheries and Sea: National Institute for Fisheries and Marine Research;

  4. Ministry of the Environment: National Institute of Biodiversity;

  5. Ministry of Culture: Natural History Museum and Dundo Museum;

In addition to these institutions, partnerships are being developed with other institutions holding biodiversity information.
