This dataset contains the 2018 IUCN French Red List of vascular plants, which assesses the extinction risk of native and archaeophytic plant species in metropolitan France. The assessment follows the IUCN Red List criteria adapted for national use and provides a scientifically grounded basis for conservation policy, biodiversity monitoring, and habitat management. Two files are included: the red lists for native species, and a legend containing information on the red lists. It was originally published as: IUCN France FCBN, AFB & MNHN (2018). La liste rouge des espèces menacées en France - Chaptire Flore vasculaire de France métropolitaine. Paris, France.
Sampling Description
Study Extent
The conservation status of all 4982 native vascular plant species in metropolitan France was assessed according to the IUCN criteria.Sampling
Only native species which reproduce and establish new populations in metropolitan France were considered. Non-native species introduced after 1500 were assigned the "Not Applicable" category and were not assessed.Method steps
- The assessment was conducted through an initial partnership involving the French Committee of the IUCN, the Federation of National Botanical Conservatories, and the National Museum of Natural History. It drew upon the expertise and knowledge of numerous botanists, as well as the skills and all the data from the metropolitan National Botanical Conservatories.
- The species were listed beforehand according to the national taxonomic reference system TaxRef. After a preparatory phase of data compilation and verification, all available information was analyzed to establish a working basis at the national level. The results were then validated collectively over twenty days of workshops organized in 2016 and 2017, with the aim of determining a category for each species according to the IUCN methodology.
- Based on the criteria of the IUCN, the plant species were assigned one of the IUCN categories: LC (Least Concern), NT (Near Threatened), VU (Vulnerable), EN (Endangered), CR (Critically Endangered), RE (Regionally Extinct), EX (Extinct), and DD (Data Deficient).
- The final phase of consolidating the results was carried out by the French Biodiversity Agency, through the technical coordination service of the National Botanical Conservatories (CBNs).
