Setae setiform and smooth, except, Z 4 and Z 5 serrate; the latter blunt or knobbed; seta R 1 inserted on the membrane. Peritreme. Extending to level of j 1. Venter. Sternal shield smooth, with 2 pairs of setae (ST 3 inserted on membrane); posterior margin waving slightly; distances between ST 1 - ST 3 60 (57 – 68), ST 2 – ST 2 57 (54 – 66). Genital shield smooth; distance between ST 5 - ST 5 58 (53 – 68). Ventrianal shield smooth, pentagonal, constricted laterally at level of preanal pores, anterior margin slightly convex, 107 (100 – 120) long, 83 (76 – 92) wide at level of ZV 2, 71 (67 – 81) wide at level of anus; setae JV 2 and JV 3 present; elliptical preanal pores posteromesad to JV 2. Caudoventral setae smooth and sharp-tipped. Chelicera. Movable digit 25 long, with 3 teeth; fixed digit 23 (22 – 23) long, with 5 teeth and a pilus dentilis. Spermatheca. Calyx saccular, variable in different views, 16 (12 – 18) long; atrium nodular, seemingly incorporated in calyx in particular views. Legs. Blunt or knobbed macroseta: St IV 24 (22 – 33). Chaetotaxy: genu II: 2 - 2 / 0, 2 / 0 - 1; genu III: 1 - 2 / 1, 2 / 0 - 1. MALE. (3 specimens measured). Dorsum. Dorsal shield and setal patterns as in female, 237 (233 – 240) long and 150 (148 – 152) wide. Peritreme. Extending to level of j 1. Venter. Ventrianal shield subtriangular, with transverse, waving striae, 95 (94 – 96) long, 124 (122 – 128) wide at the anterior corners; with 4 pairs of preanal setae (JV 1 - JV 3 and ZV 2), 2 pairs of lyrifissures (1 sub-lateral and almost in line with JV 1 and 1 lateral and well posterior to ZV 2); elliptical preanal pores mesad of and slightly posterior to JV 2. Caudoventral setae setiform, smooth and sharp-tipped. Spermatodactyl. L-shaped; shaft 18 (17 – 19) long. Legs. Blunt or knobbed macroseta: St IV 17 (16 – 18). Chaetotaxy of genua II and III same as in female.
diagnosis
Diagnosis. This species is characterized by having most of dorsal setae slender, setiform; setae Z 4 and Z 5 serrate; Z 5 blunt or knobbed; JV 5 sharp-tipped; ventrianal shield with 4 pairs of preanal setae; calyx of spermatheca saccular, broad, ca. 5 times as long as width at its mid-length.
discussion
Remarks. Kuzinellus febriculus differs from this species by having seta Z 4 setiform and smooth, and 3 pairs of preanal setae (JV 2 absent) on ventrianal shield. Kuzinellus niloticus, K. sennarensis and K. acanthus are also distinct from the new species by having seta j 6 at least ca. 0.8 times (instead of ca. 0.3 times in this new species) as long as distance between its base and the base of J 2. Kuzinellus relentus (Denmark & Matthysse) differs from the new species by having calyx of spermatheca tubular, mostly slender, bulged near atrium and flaring near vesicle. Blunt or knobbed Z 5 and St IV were observed for individuals from different or the same localities. The specimen from 150 km SW Mpika is larger than the others and has concurrently the longest dorsal shield setae and macroseta of tarsus IV. Variation in the shape of the calyx of the spermatheca was observed between the right and the left side of some individuals, between individuals of given localities and between individuals of different localities.
etymology
Etymology. This species is named after Hans Herren, first Director of Biological Control Center for Africa, Benin and one of the former Directors of International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Benin Station, Cotonou.
