Uruguay has rejoined the GBIF network as a full Voting Participant, becoming the eighth Participant country from GBIF’s Latin American region and the 38th national government with full representation in GBIF.
"I am delighted that Uruguay has joined GBIF. The country has thriving academic community with a long history of collaborative biodiversity research, both regionally and internationally", said Peter Schalk, current chair of the GBIF Governing Board.
"It has been my privilege", said Schalk, "to work previously with the Uruguayan research community on digital species information systems and bioinformatics training courses, and membership in GBIF offers Uruguayan scientists new opportunities to forge partnerships and share their data resources and expertise internationally. I look forward to the renewed working relationship!"
Gabriel Aintablian, director of Dirreción de Innovación, Ciencia y Tecnología para el Desarrollo (DICYT), signed the MOU with the GBIF Secretariat on behalf of the country's Ministry of Education and Culture.
