The GBIF Secretariat, located in Copenhagen, is looking for a Communications Specialist to join the Participation and Engagement group and expand the capacity of its small Communications team.

The incumbent’s primary responsibilities will encompass general communications support with a focus on:

This work will advance wider understanding of GBIF’s unique value proposition, working within the framework of a user-driven communications strategy, which will be updated in 2024. The incumbent will help GBIF leverage its international profile and convening power to increase its visibility and expand support of even more biodiversity-related communities of practice than at present.

Candidates must possess outstanding writing and editing talents, precise attention to detail, and demonstrated skills in making technical or scientific information clear, compelling and accessible. The post is a full-time position located in Copenhagen for a period of three (3) years with the possibility of extension.

  • Demonstrated experience engaging audiences through social media to build connections and increase brand loyalty

Required skills and experience

  • A minimum of three (3) years’ work in a similar position
  • Undergraduate degree in a field relevant to communications or GBIF’s work, or equivalent experience
  • Experience with social media and photo and video sharing platforms, as well as tools and best practices for the same
  • Commitment to and understanding of openness: open data, open licensing, open science, open culture, open social, etc.
  • Experience in implementing audience-driven communications strategies and plans
  • Full professional proficiency in English; proficiency in a second UN language is extremely desirable
  • Ability to prioritize and balance parallel assignments while delivering reliable, consistent results

Desired skills and experience

  • In-depth knowledge of a scientific, technical or environmental field
  • Experience with content management systems, markup languages (especially Markdown and AsciiDoctor), and email distribution applications
  • Experience with community moderation and management, fan appreciation initiatives and social media platforms, tools and techniques
  • Other general communications skills and competencies, including basic visual design and production

What we offer

  • A positive team atmosphere and lively work setting in a small but dynamic world capital
  • The chance for hands-on work within a small, highly effective team responsible for coordinating communications across a large and active global network
  • Opportunities to collaborate with highly skilled data scientists, informaticians, developers, researchers, policymakers and other experts
  • Varied and unique prospects for personal and professional development
  • A competitive remuneration package

This is an exciting opportunity for the right individual to develop international experience working to support evidence-driven research and policy for the benefit of science and society. If your motivation, interests and experience match these requirements, we look forward to hearing from you.

Remuneration

The selected candidate is expected to take up residency in Denmark for the duration of the contract, and the GBIF Secretariat will secure the required residence and work permit with the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A relocation package is available for internationally recruited staff.
