Aquário Vasco da Gama

Description

The Vasco da Gama Aquarium was inaugurated on May 20, 1898 and documents the beginning of the investigation and dissemination of aquatic life in Portugal. This cultural institution of the Navy brings together for public exhibition a remarkable sample of aquatic biodiversity. The living collection exhibits more than 250 freshwater and saltwater species from around the world, with emphasis on Portuguese marine fauna. Natural history collections include mainly collections of mollusks, marine fish, freshwater fish, waterfowl, turtles and marine mammals, and the collection was considerably enriched in 1935 with the legacy of D. Carlos I Oceanographic Museum.
