EDP Foz Tua: Black Wheatear (Oenanthe leucura) (Aves) - Ecological Monitoring Program [2012-2017]. Version 1.2. EDP - Energias de Portugal. Sampling event dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/99jgzp accessed via GBIF.org on 2020-09-16.

Description

The dataset contains records of black Wheatear (Oenanthe leucura) (Aves, Muscicapidae) collected in plots along the lower Tua River valley and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in May 2012 and between January and September 2013-2017, during field visits to the known area of occurrence of the target species in the lower Tua valley, in a 5-km buffer around the river itself. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 635 observations of the species, in 155 events.

Purpose

This dataset is part of a broader initiative whereby the company EDP - Energias de Portugal S.A. will made available biodiversity data collected during impact assessment and biological monitoring studies.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the Tua lower valley (Northeast Portugal), up to 22 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Alijó, Carrazeda de Ansiães and Murça

Sampling

Sampling was designed to cover the main area of reproduction of the Black Wheatear along the lower Tua River valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam, particularly in the last 7 km of the river, where most couples have their territories.
The area was intensively searched, and all known or potential territories were visited once (winter and summer/autumn) or twice (spring). Singing playbacks (five minutes each) were performed to enhance the response of the birds. Species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were made “in loco”, with the help of appropriate field guides.

Quality Control

All identifications were performed by qualified technicians

Geographic Coverages

The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the valley of the River Tua (Northeast Portugal), up to 22 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Alijó, Carrazeda de Ansiães and Murça, but mostly limited to the last 7 km of the valey.
