EDP Baixo Sabor: Land Birds - Construction and Reservoir Filling Phases: stream weirs in the Sabor tributaries [2010-2014]. EDP - Energias de Portugal. Sampling event dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/2p246m accessed via GBIF.org on 2020-09-16.

Description

The dataset contains records of land birds (Aves) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of surveys made in and around the area affected by the dams, from February 2010 to September 2014. Sampling was performed close to extant stream weirs, as well as close to locations where weirs were planned to be built in the future under the mitigation program of AHBS. The presence and identity of bird species were assessed by visual and/or acoustic observation, with the support of binoculars. The records include taxa identified at the species or genus levels.

Purpose

This dataset is part of a broader initiative whereby the company EDP - Energias de Portugal S.A. will made available biodiversity data collected during impact assessment and biological monitoring studies.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

Data were collected in a 5-km buffer around the lower Sabor main tributaries, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, and Mogadouro.

Sampling

Sampling was designed to cover the most relevant habitats for land birds in a buffer of 5 km around the lower reach of the Sabor river basin tributaries. A total of 16 point counts were set in selected extant or potential stream weirs in lower Sabor’s main tributaries. At each point, a 10-minute sampling session was performed, in which all birds detected by sight or sound were recorded. The identification was made "in situ" by experienced observers, with the support of appropriate field guides.

Quality Control

All individual identifications were performed by qualified technicians
