Description

This dataset results from the data gathered in the platform Flora-On ( http://www.flora-on.pt/ ), which contains observation records of vascular plants within mainland Portugal, made by an array of collaborators. Observations are uploaded directly by collaborators, who are either experienced botanists/naturalists, or occasional collaborators. In this latter case, the observations are first validated by the Editorial Board before publication. The Editorial Board is committed to ensure that only the most rigorous data is published, and it does not release observations whose uncertainty is judged to be high. Flora-On was created by and is kept up exclusively through the voluntary work of associate members of Sociedade Portuguesa de Botânica (Botanical Society of Portugal), its maintenance costs being supported only by the membership fees of the associates.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

This dataset includes observations falling within mainland Portugal, most of which are posterior to the date the platform Flora-On was made available online (25/Feb/2012), although there is an important volume of data starting from the 1990 decade.

Sampling

A large portion of the records corresponds to non-exhaustive observations of collaborators, but there is also an important part of it that was originated from exhaustive field sampling campaigns. Plants are identified at least to species level either in the field or in the lab, and phenological state is recorded if in bloom. In general, no specimens are collected.

Quality Control

Taxon nomenclature is fully controlled with a reference list, allowing neither spelling errors nor outdated synonyms. The reference checklist includes only the currently accepted names, which correspond to an updated version of the “Checklist da Flora de Portugal (Continental, Açores e Madeira)” ( http://ipt.gbif.pt/ipt/resource.do?r=alfa_checklist_florapt ) Exact GPS coordinates are stored in Flora-On.pt whenever possible, but are generalized to the UTM 10x10 km grid in this dataset. The responsibility of species identification rests with the collaborators, most of which have expertise in plant identification. Additionally, the Editorial Board of Flora-On is committed to ensure a high reliability of uploaded data, hence checking regularly for unlikely or doubtful occurrence records, and asking collaborators to provide pictures, descriptions or specimens whenever needed. The Editorial Board estimates at least 95% of the records to be correctly identified under the most up-to-date nomenclature.

Method steps

GPS coordinates are recorded by the collaborators (if possible), and plants identified at least to species level
Record data is uploaded to Flora-On.pt by the collaborators, either using a webmapping interface or uploading a record table
Coordinates are generalized to the UTM 10x10 km grid and are made publicly available for download in both the species factsheets and as a WFS service: http://www.flora-on.pt/wfs
