diagnostic
Body oval, deep, strongly compressed. Head length about equal to head height; preopercle smooth, without prominent spines. Snout short. Small protractile mouth with brush-like teeth in the jaws. Dorsal fin with XIV spines, no notch between spinous and soft dorsal fin; and 20 to 22 soft rays; anal fin with III spines and 16 or 17 soft rays; pectoral fins transparent with 13 to 14 soft rays; pelvic fins with I stout spine and 5 branched rays; caudal fin rounded. Pale yellow with numerous small dark spots. Black bar over head and black margin on anal fin.
distribution
Widely distributed in Indo-West Pacific from East Africa to the Hawaiian, Marquesan and Tuamoto islands, north to southern Japan and the Ogasawara Islands, south to New South Wales (Australia) and Lord Howe Island. It is common in waters around Taiwan.

New Ireland: 1, 2. — General distribution: East Africa east to Hawaiian and Tuamotu islands, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to northern Australia, Lord Howe and Norfolk islands. Solitary, in pairs or in small groups, on reef flats and in seaward coral reefs, 1 – 36 m depth. Marine.

First recorded from New Hanover by Ahl (1923: 104 – 105); a video of a specimen taken off Nusaum Island, Kavieng District, at 9 – 18 m depth, St. KR 76, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell); another taken in Senta Pass, east of New Hanover at 5 – 12 m depth, St. KR 114, in 2014.
