Description
The Institute of Natural Resources and Land Planning (INDUROT) is a University of Oviedo’s institute that was constituted in 1985 with the main objective of promoting and developing scientific and technical applied research on land-use planning, natural resources and the environment. INDUROT is located in Asturias (northern Spain) and is characterized by its interdisciplinary approach, which promotes the joint participation of professionals from diverse fields of experimental and social sciences, humanities and engineering. The involvement of all these experts on applied research to environmental issues has favoured the development of highly integrating and holistic working methodologies, as well as many documents and projects with application at a regional and local scale. INDUROT`s activity is embedded within the University of Oviedo, but also involved with the public administration of the Principality of Asturias (regional government) and other local and national administrations.A large number of projects developed by INDUROT (more than 300) have had direct and measurable effects on regional and national policies concerning spatial planning and natural resources management.
The Institute is nowadays integrated by a multidisciplinary team of lecturers, researchers and scientific-technical staff from more than 12 different areas of knowledge at the University of Oviedo:
Plant Conservation and Protected Areas.
Wildlife Conservation and Management.
Natural Resource Management and Spatial Planning.
River and Coastal Geomorphology.
Ecology and GIS analysis
Statistics.
Remote Sensing.
Environmental Law.
Environmental Geochemistry.
Communication and Environmental Education.
Civil, Environmental and Geomatics Engineering.
In addition to this, from its origins the Institute has been a pioneering centre on the development of cartographic databases and the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing techniques to natural resources management, natural hazards modelling and land use planning.
