Flies (Diptera) are of importance to human medicine, veterinary and forensic science as species can transmit bacteria and cause infections but also act as decomposers helping to reduce dead organic matter or waste. Despite the great importance of these flies and their high diversity in the Neotropics, there is limited information available through GBIF with most occurrences in Europe and North America.

The Tecnológico de Antioquia has an entomological collection with 89,000 specimens from all regions of Colombia. Publishing standardized biological information on these flies will help consolidate their information to improve its presentation and understanding, providing greater content integrity, consistency of results, and simultaneous and efficient access to data and documentation through metadata.

Geographic records allow access to these species' biogeographic distribution patterns and potential distribution models to be used in ecological and conservation contexts, and forming a basis for established control or sanitary strategies, and to aid forensic post-mortem re-location inferences.

This project will contribute to mobilizing biological data on decomposer flies through the Colombian node's platforms and the GBIF network to provide free access information. The project team will publish data articles to provide more visibility for the data. The published data can be used to make decisions that support sustainable development.
