Tropical dry forests in Caribbean Colombia are highly transformed with several collapsed plant communities and many species are threatened. The objective of this project is to compile all available data to create checklists of plant communities and sampling event datasets of field plots with occurrences of plant species in these plots. The long-term objective expands these activities to all of Colombia and includes vegetation surveys.

Aimed at scientists, agencies, non-governmental organizations and citizens, the project seeks to optimize

  • identification of reference ecosystems for restoration
  • conservation targets of protected areas
  • compensation measures for the environmental impact of projects
  • vegetation cover in the planning and management of watersheds
  • carrying capacity to establish the extraction of biological resources, and agricultural and livestock activities
  • comprehensive assessment of effects of climate change.

During the project, impact is measured by interest in the project by government officials and participants in the training workshop, while long-term results will be assessed by diversity among uses of project data and the incorporation into policy.

Project progress

The project achievements are summarized in demonstrating its ability to compile, from the information sources with the due citation, the sampling-events (plots) with their occurrences of species, for each vegetation types, at the plant communities level, for the dry forest in the Colombian tropical Caribbean.

The first dataset is published on the GBIF portal. The final publication is subject to a delay and it will be available by April 2023.

The virtual training workshop for Colombia Caribbean is planned for May 2023.
