The Atlas of Living Costa Rica (CRBio) provides integrated, free and open access to data and information about the Costa Rican biodiversity to support science, education, and conservation. CRBio is a national effort in which several organizations including non-governmental institutions, universities and government bodies have collaborated.
The first data portal of CRBio was launched in 2006. In 2016, thanks to the support of the Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), the National Biodiversity Institute of Costa Rica (INBio) implemented a new portal based on technology developed by ALA. This implementation was financed by a project grant of the Costa Rican government and includes 5,000 species pages, more than 50,000 images, and around 7 million occurrence records, all of them georeferenced. The occurrence records are part of nearly 400 databases and were published by research centres in more than 30 countries. Species pages follow the Plinian Core standard and are presented in the Atta system, developed by INBio and linked to the ALA tools. The Atta system also provides access to scientific literature through the API of the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL).
