This project to mobilize biodiversity data and identify conservation priorities is implemented by a consortium of eight African countries – Senegal, Côte-d’Ivoire, Mali, Guinea, DRC, Niger, Madagascar, and Benin.

Training workshops organized by the University of Kansas help build the data publishing capacity of project partners. The consortium identifies priority invasive alien species and threatened species for data mobilization, and publishes relevant data from collections in France, Netherlands and Belgium. More than 200,000 records of biodiversity data will be made available through GBIF.org and national portals.

Based on published data, the consortium develops distribution maps of priority species, suggests actions to monitor and control the spread of invasive alien species and provides recommendations for the conservation of threatened species.

Project Progress

A priority family list of invasive alien species and threatened species plants has been elaborated for all the countries participating in this regional project.

A Regional Capacity Enhancement Workshop focusing on data mobilization, digitization and publishing was organized by the consortium coordinator in Benin for all the regional consortium participants. In addition, National Launch Workshops were organized in Benin, Guinea, Cöte d'Ivoire and Senegal.

Over 7 316 occurence records on threatened and invasive alien species in Benin have been published and are accessible through GBIF.org

Niger became a GBIF associate participant.
