Mission

GBIF-Norway’s vision is a society where policy decisions and science are based on a deep understanding of nature, obtained through competent analysis of patterns in freely and universally available nature diversity information.

GBIF-Norway provides an essential and integrated part of the national biodiversity information infrastructure in Norway with particular focus on ensuring the interoperability with GBIF standards and informatics solutions, collecting and publishing Norwegian species occurrence data to GBIF.org, contributing to the work-programme of GBIF, and communicating the goals and values to Norwegian stakeholders.

Funding

GBIF-Norway is funded by the Research Council of Norway and the UiO Natural History Museum at the University of Oslo and the Norwegian Biodiversity Information Centre

The GBIF membership fee is made by the Research Council of Norway on behalf of the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research.

History

GBIF-Norway’s mandate is to coordinate national activities with GBIF work programmes and participate in the Norwegian delegation to the GBIF Governing Board. It is the Norwegian link to GBIF internationally, and thus the main channel for the international audience to information on Norwegian biodiversity.

GBIF-Norway is hosted as an integrated unit at the UiO Natural History Museum at the University of Oslo (UiO-NHM). It is organized as a national research data infrastructure operated by staff from the museum and the Norwegian Biodiversity Information Centre (NBIC, Artsdatabanken).

The Norwegian GBIF node was organized as a research project funded by the Research Council of Norway (RCN) and NBIC and hosted by UiO-NHM since the start in 2005. Since June 2018 NBIC staff have taken a more active role in the delivery of parts of the node mandate.

Originally appointed through the RCN, the role of Head of Delegation was delegated to UiO-NHM in 2017.

Structure

The UiO-NHM and the NBIC has a shared responsibility for maintaining contact with the institutions and researchers providing species occurrence data to GBIF and the national biodiversity data portal (Artskart). The UiO-NHM is the Norwegian representative in the GBIF Governing Board.

Norway’s national network includes

  • Norwegian Biodiversity Information Centre (NBIC, Artsdatabanken)
  • Norwegian University Museum IT group (MUSIT)
  • UiO Natural History Museum at the University of Oslo (UiO-NHM)
  • NTNU University Museum (NTNU-UM)
  • University Museum of Bergen (UiB-UM)
  • Stavanger Museum of Natural History (MUST)
  • Trømsø University Museum (UiT-UM)
  • Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA)
  • Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA)
  • Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy (NIBIO)
  • Norwegian Institute of Marine Research (IMR)
