To ensure the success of data enumeration process in providing biodiversity information from student theses, Tambora Muda Indonesia and InaBIF held a data transcription workshop for the Biodiverskripsi team.

This workshop aimed not only to enable the participants transcribe ecological data from student theses, but also understand the current trend of biodiversity data availability in Indonesia, and how our effort contributes to the state of biodiversity research in Indonesia.

This workshop was attended by 19 participants, consisting of, Tambora Muda Indonesia team for Biodiverskripsi, student helpers recruited for transcription efforts, and coordinator from participating university.

The workshop also invited additional speakers outside of Tambora Muda Indonesia:

  • Prof. Dr. Ibnu Maryanto, Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI), discussed the extent of Indonesian mammal species distribution as something to consider while transcribing data.
  • Prof. Dr. Ir. Gadis Sri Haryani, Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI), shared many types of interdisciplinary research possible from data of freshwater biota.
  • Dr. Mirza Kusrini, Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB) provided details of using biodiversity data from student theses for ecological research.
  • Dr. Anang Setiawan Achmadi, Node manager InaBIF, informed about the state of creating biodiversity database in Indonesia.

The workshop started with an introduction to Tambora Muda Indonesia and Biodiverskripsi in general and how current data publishing practices Indonesia benefit from this project. Then it proceeded with materials on biodiversity data mobilization and publishing acquired from BIFA Capacity Enhancement workshop reinforced with data transcription practices using sample theses provided by Biodiverskripsi team to familiarize the participants with the process, particularly with Darwin Core standards.

At the end of the workshop, a reporting procedure to monitor the transcription process was discussed, along with types of research possible with transcribed data. A guideline prototype was provided for the participants to help them conduct data enumeration independently in their university of domicile. The positive feedback of the participants and the invited speakers during and after the workshop will serve as substantial part of this project success.
