The dataset reports the data of Carabid beetles collected by pitfall traps in an alpine region within the Eastern Alps, especially the populations of beetles living in meadows and screes from 1300 m a.s.l. to 2160 m a.s.l. on the Southern Dolomites were analysed. In particular, the entomofauna of four areas,Vette di Feltre, Erera Brendol, La Vareta and Monte Garda, was sampled.
The dataset comprises two tables: the event table, where data on sample sites were given, and the occurrence table, where species abundance was given.
Purpose
The main purpose of this work is to give open access to a dataset as complete as possible and according to FAIR principles, on distribution and abundance of carabid beetles in the Southern Dolomites (Italy, see geographic coverage). The dataset included here is aimed at carrying forward an initiative of adopting a formal structure for datasets on carabid beetles, and to give open access to these data.Sampling Description
Study Extent
The study area involved high altitude grassland. Sampling frequency was about 20-30 days (emptying of traps).Sampling
The sampling method used was that of pitfall traps, which has already been approved and validated. The samples were obtained by pitfall traps, consisting of plastic cups with a diameter of 9.2 cm at the mouth and 7 cm at the base and 11 cm high, buried to the edge, and filled to about 3 cm from the bottom with a commercial wine vinegar solution containing 5% formalin by volume. The traps were emptied at intervals of about twenty days.Method steps
- Once the traps were placed, they were left in place for twenty to thirty days, emptied and repositioned. After the collection cycle, the contents of the traps were transferred to containers with a label (place and date) and stored in alcohol. The samples were then transferred to the laboratory. Here they were sorted by separating the carabids from everything else. After that, the species were identified and the number of individuals was counted. The information obtained was then collected in an Excel file, where the unit of effort was also recorded among the various data. The tables have been standardized following Darwin Core and finally published on GBIF.
