The present project was focused on digitizing the data on vegetation data on Mt. Bangtae, a forest genetic resource reserve, recorded between 2008-2013 by vegetation scientists taking part in forest inventories and vegetation surveys of the forest reserve. These data are expected to contribute to the biodiversity management and conservation of these highly fire-vulnerable forest ecosystems.Sampling Description
Study Extent
Mt. Bangtae (1,444 m above sea level) is located at 37° 50′~37° 57′ north latitude and 128° 15′~128° 30′ east longitude. It is located along the main ridge of Gachilbong (1,240 m) and Galjeongokbong (1,204 m) and spans the boundary between Kirin-myeon, Sangnam-myeon, and Hongcheon-gun, Inje-gun, Gangwon-do.Sampling
In the growing seasons 2008 and 2013, vegetation was surveyed in nine temporary plots: six in 2008 and three in 2013. The data were sampled according to the relevé method (plot sizes were 400 m2 20 x 20 m, and 100 m2 , 10 × 10 m) using the Braun-Blanquet coverabundance scale (Mueller-Dombois and Ellenberg 1974). The total cover and individual cover by species for all vascular plants were estimated for the following vegetation layers: the tree canopy layer (the overstory), the understory layer including tree undergrowth and tall shrubs and the field layer comprising the herbaceous species, together with tree and shrub seedlings. The position of the center of each site was georeferenced using GPS receiver in WGS84 datum .Quality Control
Principles of Data Quality. Scientific names and locality names in the digitized datasets were kept the same as in the original paper. The authors determined the species names given according to the Provisional checklist of vascular plants for the Korea Peninsula Flora (Chang et al., 2014). All scientific names were cross-checked and taxonomically updated using the taxonomic module of BRAHMS (Pouwer et al., 2008)Method steps
- According to the criteria of Font Kim (2014), two life forms were recognised: shrub (woody individual less than 5 m tall that branches from the base at 1.5 to 4.9 m) and tree (woody individual that had a shaft of ≥ 5 m in height), all the individuals rooted within the transect and having ≥ 1 cm of DAP, were measured (DBH, height) and were identified as fully as possible to species. We registered data as common name entered other field data with the Darwin Core format was published
