The north-western part of North Kazakhstan region is located on the southern edge of the West Siberian Plain, while the south-western part of the region is located on the Kokshetau Upland, the northern end of the Kazakh Shallow Soil, also known as the Sary Arch. The relief here is mountainous and pine-like. The rest of the region is occupied by forest-steppe expanses. Separate mention should be made of the Ishim River, which originates in the Niyaz mountain massif of the Kazakh shallow hills. In this region the river flows along the flat Ishim plain in a wide floodplain with numerous old rivers, in its lower reaches it flows among swamps and discharges into the Irtysh River outside Kazakhstan. There are more than 2000 lakes in the region. In the north North Kazakhstan region borders with the Russian Federation.
