Description

This dataset contains the data on specimens of invertebrates deposited in the State Museum of Natural History of the NAS of Ukraine (Lviv, Ukraine) that were chosen as prioritized for digitization in 2023-2024 in frames of the NRFU (National Research Foundation of Ukraine) project to virtually preserve them in case of possible destruction due to hostilities.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The study covers different groups of invertebrates deposited as preserved specimens at the State Museum of Natural History of the NAS of Ukraine (Lviv, Ukraine). These specimens were selected as those having the main priority for digitization by respective sub-collections' curators.

Sampling

Different sampling methods were applied depending on the organism group. Most of the specimens represented in the dataset were sampled directly from the wild in different periods. They were dried and pinned (bugs and butterflies) or permanent microscopic slides were prepared (oribatid mites and nematodes). All these specimens are officially deposited at the State Museum of Natural History of the NAS of Ukraine (Lviv, Ukraine) and are available for further investigations upon request. The data were captured from the specimnes' labels.

Quality Control

The data were first checked and verified manually using MS Excel and then additionally cross-checked in the OpenRefine environment. The taxonomic names were checked to correspond to the GBIF taxonomic backbone and EOL. GBIF data validator has been applied to final check the dataset before uploading.

Method steps

  1. 1. The prioritized specimens were selected and checked for preserving status, and presence of the readable label, and generally evaluated for fitting to digitization protocols and available technical facilities. 2. The still image of each specimen has been captured using different photosystems available at the State Museum of Natural History of the NAS of Ukraine (Lviv, Ukraine) in RAW (master file) and JPEG (distributive file) formats. 3. The data from the labels has been manually filled into the table from the created images. 4. The first step of data quality control has been realized, checking for typos, technical mistakes, and errors. 5. The occurrence records were georeferenced using the data from the field "locality" and coordinates accuracy has been evaluated. 6. The second step of data quality control has been realized, checking for consistency of provided coordinates and localities descriptions. 7. Separate datasets curated by respective sub-collections' curators were merged into the common dataset. 8. The third step of data quality control has been realized, checking for consistency of provided data in the merged dataset. 9. Dataset has been published.
