In the beginning of 2020, Aage V. Jensen Nature Foundation acquired a big nature area Søholt Storskov placed between the three largest lakes in the middle of the island of Lolland in the Southern Baltic Sea. The area of 1,134 ha comprises old and young deciduous forests, lakes and agricultural land. Map of the area: https://www.avjf.dk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Søholt-Storskov_Sort-afgrænsning.pdf Description in Danish: https://www.avjf.dk/avjnf/naturomraader/soeholt-storskov/ The foundation’s goal is to preserve and improve the nature values and biodiversity in the area. Prior to the planned nature restoration activities, Aage V. Jensen Nature Foundation initiated a baseline monitoring programme for the biodiversity in Søholt Storskov. Survey of epiphytic lichens and bryophytes conducted by biologist Örjan Fritz from Naturcentrum AB was a part of this programme.Sampling Description
Study Extent
N/ASampling
The study was carried out in the forested areas of Søholt Storskov. In total 78 plots were surveyed. Each sampling plot was circular with a 15 m radius. After identification of the center of the plot, marked with a stick, the limits of the plot were measured using two 30 m long tapes that intersected the center of the plot making four sections. Trees were surveyed in each of the four sections following a clockwise order. The systematic approach was important in order to know which trees were surveyed and which trees remained. In the sampling plots epiphytic lichens and bryophytes were surveyed on standing living and dead tree trunks from 0 up to 2 m height. Stumps higher than breast height (1.5 m) were also included, whereas twigs (below 2 m) and logs were excluded from the survey. To avoid many smaller young trees and bushes, the minimal diameter of the tree trunk was restricted to 10 cm. Thinner trees or bushes were excluded from the survey even if their height exceeded 2 m. In each plot the presence of epiphytic lichens and bryophytes was recorded for each tree species (in all 24 tree species). Field work was carried out during 7 days covering two periods in September 2020. In average, about 11 plots were surveyed each day and it took roughly 45 minutes to complete a plot.Quality Control
