EDP Baixo Sabor: Construction and Reservoir Filling Phases – Natural Wolf Prey (Roe Deer) [2010-2014]

Study Extent

The data were collected in transects set in 38 5x5 km squares established in the lower Sabor river valley, its tributaries and in the rivers Maçãs and Angueira, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro and Macedo de Cavaleiros.

Sampling

Sampling was designed to cover the whole valley of the lower Sabor river, its tributaries and the rivers Maçãs and Angueira, with particular emphasis on places where the presence of Iberian Wolf had been confirmed previously and in places where the species was expected to be present. A total of 38 transects was established in the study area (one per 5x5 km square). Each transect had a length of 800 m, and it was surveyed for roe deer once per season during the day. Surveys involve the detection of faecal pellets and/or footprints of the target species, given the difficulties of directly observing individuals of this species. All signs (confirmed or probable) of roe deer presence were identified "in loco" by experienced technicians.
