Species on the Edge is a new ground-breaking partnership programme of NatureScot and seven nature conservation charities, all dedicated to improving the fortunes of 37 priority species found along Scotland's coast and islands. Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project is delivering a four and a half year programme of work to tackle the impacts of environmental change on wildlife, to benefit both nature and people. The partnership consists of Amphibian and Reptile Conservation, The Bat Conservation Trust, Buglife, Bumblebee Conservation Trust, Butterfly Conservation, NatureScot, Plantlife, and RSPB Scotland. Drawing on the knowledge and experience within the partnership, we have identified seven landscape areas around Scotland?s coast and islands where collaboration will provide the greatest benefits. These seven areas are: The Solway Coast, The Inner Hebrides, Argyll & Lochaber, The Outer Hebrides, North Scotland Coast, Orkney Islands, Shetland Islands and East Scotland Coast. This dataset contains field totals from wader surveys conducted for the Species on the Edge project. The surveys began in 2023 on Orkney Islands, Shetland Islands and The Inner Hebrides. Additional Species on the Edge project areas are expected to undertake wader monitoring during the timespan of the project. At each site, counts of Oystercatcher, Curlew, Snipe, Lapwing and Redshank were undertaken.Purpose
Data used to understand distribution of breeding waders at the start of the project and to advise land managers on appropriate management for the species and monitor impact of habitat management.
Sampling Description
Method steps
- Wader monitoring using O'Brien and Smith methodology was used. This dataset contains the field totals of each species monitored for each visit. The number of visits to each site varied: on Orkney and Shetland, 3 visits were undertaken but on Colonsay, only 1 visit was possible. On Islay, 2 visits were undertaken. On Shetland and Orkney, data were collected as the total count of individual birds in each surveyed field for Curlew, Lapwing, Oystercatcher, Redshank and Snipe with counts of pairs of Oystercatcher and counts of drumming/chipping male Snipe, for each visit to each site. On Colonsay and Islay, data were collected as the total count of individual birds for each species at each site for each visit at a 10M resolution were possible, but 1KM resolution for some sites.
