Se presentan los resultados del estudio realizado para obtener el inventario de vertebrados terrestres del Parque Nacional Cañón del Sumidero, Chiapas, México, y su área de influencia (Región terrestre prioritaria para la conservación: La Chacona-Cañón del Sumidero, RTP-141 y el Área de Importancia para la Conservación de las Aves en México: Corredor Laguna Bélgica-Sierra El Limón-Cañón del Sumidero, AICA-91). La información recopilada, se obtuvo de la consulta de literatura especializada, de bases de datos curatoriales y del registro en 50 sitios de campo que fueron muestreados durante los meses de junio del 2004 a noviembre del 2005. La riqueza específica para el área de estudio corresponde a 391 especies (16 anfibios, 52 reptiles, 248 aves y 75 mamíferos). Parte de esta información se capturó en el sistema Biótica, con un total de 3,702 registros de vertebrados terrestres pertenecientes a 304 especies (15 anfibios, 41 reptiles, 195 aves y 53 mamíferos). De éstos registros, 3,037 fueron observaciones, 329 recolectas de campo, 81 recopilaciones de museos nacionales e internacionales, 25 donados a colecciones científicas nacionales y 230 reportados por literatura especializada. La información faltante, no se ingresó al sistema Biótica por carecer de georeferencias, pero fue considerada en la cuenta total de especies, por pertenecer al área de estudio. Las especies más abundantes fueron Eleutherodactylus pipilans y Bufo valliceps, en el caso de los anfibios; Sceloporus variabilis y Anolis tropidonotus, para los reptiles; Coragyps atratus y Phalachrochorax brasilianum, en cuanto a las aves y para los mamíferos: Artibeus jamaicensis y Peromyscus mexicanus. Con relación a los estados de conservación, 69 especies de vertebrados terrestres se encuentran en alguna categoría de riesgo considerada por la NOM-059-ECOL-2001 (cinco en peligro, 21 amenazadas y 43 con protección especial). En lo concerniente a la información etnozoológica, se registraron los nombres comunes (en español, tzeltal y chiapaneca) para 102 especies de vertebrados terrestres (cuatros anfibios, 21 reptiles, 50 aves y 27 de mamíferos) y se reconocieron cinco usos tradicionales (alimentación humana, mascota, medicinal, ornato y el artesanal).
