Description

Los Porifera constituyen uno de los grupos de invertebrados marinos más biodiversos y abundantes en los ecosistemas bentónicos marinos, donde intervienen en diversos procesos que son de vital importancia para los mismos. En las últimas décadas las esponjas han adquirido un creciente interés debido a su importancia evolutiva, ecológica y económica (p.ej., biotecnológica). Sin embargo, y a pesar del avance en el conocimiento de este grupo en México, los resultados evidencian la necesidad de continuar con esta ardua labor para completar el censo faunístico de las esponjas presentes en nuestros mares. Esto nos permitirá reconocer la biodiversidad de esponjas marinas en México, y su posible aprovechamiento en áreas como la farmacología, biotecnología, biomédica y de conservación. Recientemente, las investigaciones acerca de la fauna de esponjas en el Pacífico mexicano han tenido importantes contribuciones (véase literatura del proponente y de los colaboradores del proyecto). Sin embargo, aun existen lugares de gran importancia para la biodiversidad (p.ej. áreas naturales protegidas que incluyen lagunas costeras, sistemas arrecifales e islas, entre otros) en donde se desconoce su fauna. Por su parte, aunque el Gran Caribe es considerado una de las zonas mejor conocidas en lo que se refiere a los Porifera, las esponjas del Golfo de México y el Caribe mexicanos, han recibido poca atención hasta nuestros días. Por lo tanto, este proyecto tiene como objetivo contribuir al conocimiento faunístico de los poríferos en México, ya que se pretende incorporar al menos 800 nuevos registros de esponjas. Además se creará una nueva colección y base de datos para las esponjas del Golfo de México y el Caribe mexicanos. También se pretende iniciar una colección de tejidos para posteriores análisis de ADN.
