BID_Strengthening Malawi's Biodiversity Information Facility_Threatened plants of Malawi

Description

Malawi has an estimated 339 records of Threatened plants which are currently being digitized in BRAHMS database. This dataset is a fraction of what the herbarium has in its current collection. Most of these samples do not have collector names and numbers attached to them and as well as georeferences because they are quite ancient dating back to 1927. Georeferencing was accomplished using a Malawi Collecting localities list extracted from Flora Zambesiaca: collecting localities in the Flora Zambesiaca area by Pope & Pope(2000 https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/distributed/F/bo9856065.html and GEOLocate program http://www.geo-locate.org/.

Purpose

To strengthen Malawis Biodiversity Information Facility

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The project covers the entire country of Malawi

Sampling

This data was extracted from preserved herbarium material

Method steps

  1. the lists consists of samples which have been encoded in BRAHMS database and hence they can be retrieved at anytime period when need arises. Please note that most records were not georeferenced and this had to be done using the Geolocate software-http://www.geo-locate.org/web/WebFileGeoref.aspx and the Malawi place gazeteer by Pope & Pope (2000). Some samples had been georeferenced in Degrees , minutes and seconds and these were converted to decimal degrees using a web-based program -http://www.rcn.montana.edu/resources/converter.aspx

Additional info

Specific localities have not been included to protect the plants in question since they are under threat.
